Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers and businesses about a new phishing attack that resembles an e-mail confirmation claiming the recipient has filed a complaint with BBB about a business. The malicious e-mails first came to the attention of BBB on Thursday, October 15.

These telemarketers are claiming to offer a “free” medical card. The pitch is that the caller needs to verify the bank account number in order for them to send a “medical card which prevents the recipient from having to pay any future medical bills…” Some callers understood that the card would pay for more things than their medicare card or social security benefits.

“Many drivers are unprepared for the consequences of becoming the victim of a hit-and-run crash when the other driver cannot be identified,” said Steve Cox, Vice President of the Council of Better Business Bureaus.“ Instead of the at-fault driver’s auto insurance policy covering the victim’s costs for medical expenses, vehicle repairs and a replacement rental car, it ends up being the victim’s responsibility to pay the deductible, as well as all other expenses.”

Across the U.S., homeowners facing mortgage foreclosure are being scammed by foreclosure “rescue” companies promising to save their house but that only take their money. In light of this emerging trend, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that gloomy forecasts for the housing and financial markets means that increasingly more people could fall prey to mortgage foreclosure scams in the coming months and years.
